Daniella & Gilby Clarke
09.10.10
Considering the industries they’ve established themselves in, it’s no surprise that Gilby and Daniella Clarke find a strong connection between music and fashion. “Musicians are creative people, so they’ll be a little freer with the way they dress. That translates into style and design, too.”
Daniella, who owns the savvy Frankie B. denim line, got her first sewing machine when she was 12. “Before that, I was cutting up towels and clothes to make new patterns,” she says. “I had a real passion for fashion.” That keen style sense gave her the confidence to think outside the box when it came to the design aspect of their home. Her husband concurs: “Because of her experience in that world, I think she knew she had the ability to avoid the cookie-cutter version of what you’d typically find in the furniture warehouse.”
The bold couple didn’t hire a designer to outfit their home when they purchased it. “We didn’t really want someone else’s influence in our home. We wanted to speak for ourselves and who we are as a family,” Daniella says. But they did smartly decided to split up the decorating duties to avoid arguments: Gilby got to do whatever he liked in the garage, music studio and game room, and Daniella got to decorate the bedroom, living room and kitchen. Regardless, there’s a melding of design that flows effortlessly throughout—including “Henry,” the 8-foot-tall metal-clad knight that welcomes you through the front door. (These people are rockstars, after all.)
“It was important to us that people who came here found it comfortable,” Gilby says of the Mediterranean/Bohemian-type atmosphere the couple has created together. The recording studio he designed regularly receives visits from musicians the caliber of Pat Boon, Alice Cooper, Nancy Sinatra and countless others. “I had a [music] session the other day, and I kept hearing how homey they thought the vibe in the house was. That’s cool,” he says, giving it a moment of thought. “The home should be lived in.”
